会長挨拶 — 2026年5月07日 東京ピースウィングロータリーEクラブ会長の時間

先日、友人からこんな言葉をもらいました。

「日本は、あなたにたくさんのものをくれたね。」

そして別の友人からは、こう言われました。

「日本は、あなたに第二の人生をくれた。」

どちらも、何気ない一言でした。でも、立ち止まって考えると——本当に、その通りだと思いました。

私はアメリカ中西部で育ちました。祖父は真珠湾攻撃のサバイバーです。大学でほぼ思いつきで日本語を選んだ。そんな私が、人生の中でも特に苦しかった時期を経て、ロータリー財団の奨学金でロータリー世界平和フェローとして日本に戻ってきました。あのとき、日本は私を温かく迎えてくれました。そして私の人生は、自分でも想像できなかったほど豊かに花開いていきました。

先日、「Don't Make Me Call The Dogs」というタイトルで、ストーリースラムのステージに立ちました。その話の中でも少し触れましたが——あの最も辛かった時期から、ちょうど一年後に、私は平和フェローとして日本に戻ってきたのです。一年で、全てが変わりました。

ロータリーが、その扉を開けてくれました。

日本と、ロータリーへの感謝は、言葉では言い尽くせません。ピースウィングは、私にとってその感謝の生きた表現です。

そして今週日曜日、5月10日——私たちは朝陽学園の子供たちと音楽を作ります。

律子さんが何週間もかけて心を込めて準備をしてくれました。毎日、子供たちが喜んでくれるかどうかを心配しながら。その愛情と緊張感は、音楽より先に、きっと子供たちに届くと思っています。

榊原学園長からは、こんなメッセージをいただきました。「10日は園児たちがお世話になります。」その言葉の重さを、胸に刻んでいます。

私たちはパフォーマンスをしに行くのではありません。一緒に時間を過ごし、音楽を楽しみ、本物の何かを分かち合いに行くのです。きっとあの部屋にいる全員が——子供たちも、メンバーも——何かを持ち帰ることになると思います。

みんなの心に残る、大切な時間になりますように。

President's Greeting — May 6, 2026

Recently, a friend said something that hit me right upside the head and made me think deeply.

"Japan has given you a lot."

And then the next day, another friend said: "Japan gave you a second chance at life."

Both said almost in passing. But when I sat with them — I realized just how true they are.

I grew up in the American Midwest. My grandfather was a Pearl Harbor survivor. I took Japanese in university almost on a whim. And then, after one of the hardest periods of my life, Rotary brought me back to Japan as a World Peace Fellow — and Japan welcomed me with open arms. My life blossomed beyond anything I could have imagined.

I recently stood on stage at a Story Slam and told some of that story (“Don’t Make me Call the Dogs”). What I carry with me always is this: it was almost exactly one year from my lowest point to the moment I stepped off the plane in Japan as a Peace Fellow. One year. And everything changed.

Rotary opened that door.

My gratitude to Japan and to Rotary is beyond words. Peace Wing is the living expression of that gratitude.

And this Sunday, May 10th — we create music together with the children of Choyo Gakuen.

Ritsuko san has poured weeks of heart into the preparations — worrying every single day whether the children will enjoy it. That kind of love travels ahead of the music. I know it will reach them.

Principal Sakakibara sent us a message: "On the 10th, the children will be in your care." I am holding those words close.

We're not going in with a performance. We're going in to spend time together, make some noise, share something real. And I have a feeling we'll all come home changed — the children, the members, everyone in that room.

I know we will be making lasting memories for everyone in the room.

Unite for good. You are not alone.
