今週、多摩中ロータリーグループの会合に出席しました。多摩中グループは私たちの地域の13のロータリークラブのネットワークで、隔月で会合を開いています。今回は特別でした—各クラブが新会員を紹介し、過去1年間で何人が入会または退会したかを共有しました。

グループ全体の新しいロータリアンに会えて元気をもらいました。でも本当に印象に残ったのは、立川こぶしロータリークラブが主導したセッションです。彼らはロータリーソングについて—その歴史、意味—を教えてくれました。そして、自分たちのクラブソングを歌いました。

美しかったです。6声のハーモニー。声が溶け合って。クラブの全員が歌詞を知っている。部屋の中に誇りとつながりを感じました。

私は英子さんに振り向いて言いました。「ピースウィングにも自分たちの歌があったらどうだろう?」

私たちのクラブには音楽家がいます。律子はジャズピアニストです。コンサートを企画しています。音楽は私たちの一部です。私たちの精神を捉えた歌があってもいいのでは—グローバルなリーチ、地域奉仕、平和へのコミットメント?

たぶん来年のプロジェクトかもしれません。でも、クラブを強く持続可能にするものについて考えさせられました。

今年、ピースウィングは3人の新会員を迎えています。実は先日、間違えました—2人の新会員と言いましたが、今年の初めにピースフェローのイダを迎えたことを忘れていました。イダはコペンハーゲンを拠点にしていますが、日本が大好きで頻繁に戻ってきます。彼女はピースウィングを、日本のコミュニティとつながり続ける方法として大切にしています。

先週1人の会員が入会しました。もう1人の申請は最終承認段階にあります。

これで私たちは20人を超える会員数に戻ります。

大したことではないように聞こえるかもしれませんが、重要なことです。昨年の次期会長研修で、リーダーシップはクラブの持続可能性のための「マジックナンバー」として20人の会員について話していました。その数を下回ることの課題を感じてきました—リーダーシップの選択肢が少なくなり、同じ人が複数の任期を務め、プロジェクトの能力が減少します。

20人を超えることで、余裕ができます。より多くの声。より多くの視点。より多くの手。

年の初めに、ピースフェロー2人を含む5人の新会員を追加する目標を設定しました。おそらく5人には届きませんが、3人を獲得し、誰も失いませんでした。良い年です。

ピースウィングのビジョンは常に、ピースフェローが国を離れた後でも、ロータリーと日本のコミュニティとつながり続けられる場所であることでした。

意味のある経験を創り出すほど—朝陽学園コンサート、ドナルド・マクドナルド・ハウスとの関係、TELLチャリティークライム—何か重要なことの一部になりたい人々を引き付けることができます。

音楽は人々を結びつけます。立川こぶしが6声のハーモニーでクラブソングを歌うこと、私たちのメンバーが朝陽学園の子どもたちと音楽を創る準備をすること、あるいはいつかピースウィングが自分たちの歌を歌うこと—それはつながりについてです。コミュニティ。共有された目的。

私たちはここで何かを築いています。一度に一人の会員。一度に一つのプロジェクト。一度に一つの音符。

This week I attended our Tamanaka group meeting. The Tamanaka group is a network of 13 Rotary clubs in our area, and we meet every other month. This time was special - each club introduced their new members and shared how many people joined or left over the past year.

It was energizing to meet new Rotarians from across the group. But what really got me was a session led by Tachikawa Kobushi Rotary Club. They taught us about the Rotary song - its history, its meaning. Then they sang their own club song.

It was beautiful. Six-part harmony. Voices blending together. Everyone in their club knowing the words. You could feel the pride and connection in the room.

I turned to Eiko and said, "What if Peace Wing had our own song?"

We have musicians in our club. Ritsuko is a jazz pianist. We're organizing a concert. Music is part of who we are. Why not a song that captures our spirit - our global reach, our local service, our commitment to peace?

Maybe that's a project for next year. But it got me thinking about what makes a club strong and sustainable.

This year, Peace Wing is welcoming three new members. I actually made a mistake the other day - I said two new members, forgetting that we welcomed Peace Fellow Ida earlier in the year. Ida is based in Copenhagen but loves Japan and comes back frequently. She values Peace Wing as a way to stay connected to the community here.

One member joined last week. Another's application is in the final approval stages.

This means we're getting back above 20 members.

That might not sound like a big deal, but it is. At the President-Elect training last year, leadership talked about the "magic number" of 20 members for club sustainability. We've felt the challenges of dropping below that number - fewer options for leadership, same people serving multiple terms, less capacity for projects.

Getting back above 20 gives us breathing room. More voices. More perspectives. More hands for the work.

At the beginning of the year, I set a goal of adding five new members, with at least two Peace Fellows. We probably won't hit five, but we got three - and we didn't lose anyone. That's a good year.

Our vision as Peace Wing has always been to be a place where Peace Fellows can stay connected to Rotary and to the community in Japan, even after they leave the country.

The more we create meaningful experiences - the Choyo Gakuen concert, our relationship with Ronald McDonald House, the TELL charity climb - the more we attract people who want to be part of something that matters.

Music brings people together. Whether it's Tachikawa Kobushi singing their club song in six-part harmony, or our members preparing to create music with children at Asahi Gakuen, or maybe someday Peace Wing singing our own song - it's about connection. Community. Shared purpose.

We're building something here. One member at a time. One project at a time. One note at a time.
